Twenty seven years ago the first Draft Horse and Mule show was held on the Bonner County fairgrounds in Sandpoint, Idaho, a small picturesque town on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille in the ruggedly beautiful Idaho Panhandle.
It was the first show of its kind to feature all five of the draft horse breeds and the draft mules. There were thirty-four entries in that first show and some of those folks are still involved in putting together and exhibiting in what has become known as The International.
The show has had its share of thrills, chills, and an occasional spill. It has had its share of heartaches with the passing of cherished members and supporters. Success has also brought its share of "Growing Pains" but, with all of this, those involved in the planning and production have done their best to preserve the sprit and tradition that was started back in October of 1976. |

The North Idaho Draft Horse and Mule Association was the architect, sponsor and driving force of this extravaganza but, without the dedication and support of the many volunteers, service organizations, local businesses, and the Sandpoint Community this show would not be the success it has become.
Whether it is nostalgia for a bygone era, the joy of watching these magnificent animals competing in the various classes, or, just something that came into being at the right time and the right place, whatever the happy circumstance, it has made "The International" a delight to its fans, and as special as Autumn itself.
