EDUCATE YOURSELFBEFORE VOTING.

SUPPLEMENTAL LEVY VOTE IS MARCH 14

ON MARCH 14, VOTERS WILL GO to the polls to vote on a supplemental levy to support our 3,700 students in the 12 schools across Bonner County. It seems there is much confusion as to the purpose of this levy, so here is an attempt to answer some questions.

First, this levy has nothing to do with the plant facilities levy that was brought before the voters in August of last year. It is a replacement levy that will go to fund the operational costs of our schools—schools that have continued to thrive over the last several years.

“Over the last five years, we have adjusted our practices significantly to reflect the feedback of our community. We have added full-day kindergarten options, increased experiential learning classrooms and created a Homeschool Academy,” said Lake Pend Oreille School Superintendent Shawn Woodward. “We have also continued to build on our pathways for students that better prepare them for both college and career options after high school. We have done this —without additional expense— with input and support of our community; a community that voted 70 percent to pass our last instructional levy.”

While technically it is an operational levy, it is called a supplemental levy due to the fact it supplements the tax dollars allocated from the state budget.

“In our case the levy accounts for approximately one-third of the overall operating budget of our school district,” said Woodward.

The supplemental levy has been in place for the last 17 years and has been renewed by the voters every two years. Although the district qualifies for a permanent levy override, the Board of Trustees chose not to ask the voters for this.

For many the primary question is, what will this cost? The answer in most cases is not even one dollar more per month than what you are already paying. Owners of a home with an assessed valuation of $250,000 with the homeowner’s exemption will see an increase to current school taxes of only 50 cents per month.

Another question that is often raised is what will happen if the levy does not pass? If the levy is defeated, the result would have a ripple effect beyond the four walls of the schools. In addition to the over 300 people the district will be forced to lay off, schools would close and class sizes would likely be over 40 students each, and there would be double-shifts at the schools. People looking to move to our community will be deterred due to our school system’s lack of funding and those who live here may likely choose to move away.

These are just some of the facts surrounding the upcoming levy. If you have additional questions, log onto http://www.lposd.org/boardof-trustees/supplemental-levy for more information or contact Superintendant Shawn Woodward or a member of the Board.
